You’ve likely heard of Fortune’s “Great Places to Work” list, or similar. Increasingly, business and non profit management leaders are discussing how to increase innovation and reduce employee turnover and training costs… by keeping employees excited about their work and workplace. “When people feel like they belong at work, they are more productive, motivated, engaged and 3.5 times more likely to contribute to their fullest potential” (HBR, Feb 2019). There are observed and quantifiable positive ripple effects from happy employees — greater creativity, willingness to “go the extra mile”, institutional memory, clear thinking vs freneticism, reduced hiring and training costs (less of the institutional musical chairs) , a reputation halo effect, and the list goes on.
