Understanding other folks – everyone is an Iceberg

Posted on

Everyone has a story – the produce vendor around the corner, who is from Syria and always smiling, the bitter older lady who lives on the floor below and yelled at me to stop dancing (and later told a neighbor she wished she hadn’t been so harsh), the colleague who talks too much in meetings, the person who only has beautiful vacation photos and exciting evenings out on their social media.

We are all icebergs – about 10 % above the surface of the water, often gorgeously shining in the sun, and 90% of the volume, with most of the crags and stories below the surface. That metaphor reminds me to not compare my “whole iceberg” to social media profiles (their 10%). The metaphor also helps me take a breath and be a bit more patient with situations or reactions I don’t understand, and ask why.

This cultural iceberg illustration is especially helpful to travelers, but it also has application to individual characters, so it’s helpful to remember we often have different assumptions and reactions. So, take a breath, save yourself from (self?) judgement, and ask questions.
