Trying to Steady the Rage – Insurrection at the US Capitol

Posted on

After yesterday’s events in Washington DC, it’s been hard to not be consumed by rage,  sadness,  fear.  It’s easy to  withdraw,  or conversely to angrily profess opinions (on what happened,  what led to it, what should happen now). There’s no doubt in my mind that law enforcement would have been much harsher had the rioters, the domestic terrorists been black,  as many meme side-by-side images have highlighted. How do you steady the rage?

I am sad. I am angry. I am afraid.  Yesterday exposed the darkness in our midst.  I am also hopeful, because much is exposed (including the faces of the terrorists). It is the moment to decide who we as individuals,  who we as leaders,  who we as a nation want to be.

Wherever you happen to be in the world,  I encourage you to take some time to be quiet,  to calm your swirling mind (10 minutes,  or an hour,  or going more slowly a full day/week can feel hard… but give yourself some time) and begin to discern what you are feeling and thinking.  It’s all ok, and we’ll feel differently in different moments; jot things down,  even if they feel crazy or disempowering or disconnected from how we “should” feel. Eventually,  you WILL tap into your inner voice,  your intuition… and how you want to be in the world.  And you’ll have the emotional roots to begin growing that way.
